Invitation to Meeting
This meeting at Tramp's Grand Olde Saloon on December 4, 1993 presented all of the elements of the classical Rascal's Challenge. The Challenge, however, was self-presented. That is to say, Dan Morrison gave himself the challenge of finding something interesting that happened on December 4 and came up with the patenting of a cigar lighter by Moses F. Gale of Brooklyn. The program included a slide show about Gale and his many inventions. There were three songs by the Rascal Quartet under the direction of Greg Scheer, including an anonymous medieval madrigal "Good, Good Indeed, the Herb's Good Weed," Victor Herbert's 1905 song, "A Woman is Only A Woman, But a Good Cigar is a Smoke," and "My Last Cigar, or, Twas Off the Blue Canaries," attributed erroneously to James Hubbard, and now the RR&R theme song. Pennsylvania poet-laureate, Sam Hazo presented his commissioned poem titled When the Evening Gets Down to Cigars.
